What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis

  • is a century-old and scientifically proven form of therapy to treat certain mental, physical and psychosomatic disorders
  • promotes the self-healing process, the individual responsibility and the creative abilities
  • is a verbal and non-verbal form of communication
  • uses the patient’s own resources
  • improves the ability to relax and letting go
Hypnosis is a natural state of increased focused attention, concentration, and deep relaxation, also called “trance state”. Trance states occur naturally every day in most people and are comparable to the relaxed state we reach when in meditation or doing yoga.
Clinical or medical hypnosis is being used for relaxation, for the therapy of specific psychological or physical disorders as well as to improve performance (in sports, studying, exams and professional life).

How to get into a hypnotic state

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention and relaxation, which occurs naturally in everyday life.

Examples are

  • day-dreaming, or
  • this state of being in thoughts during a monotonous activity, e.g. driving for a long time on an uninteresting highway

The perception changes and is more intense. During a hypnosis session, the therapist (hypnotist) helps the patient to go into a hypnotic state, and use this trance state to work on a therapeutic goal.

What are the advantages of medical hypnosis?

  • Cost-effectiveness: Hypnotherapy is considered a kind of brief therapy (Simple problems can be treated within an timeframe of a few sessions.).
  • Compared to medication: freedom from adverse effects, interactions, addictive risks, drug withdrawal.

  • Self-hypnosis allows the patient to maintain skills learnt in therapy.
  • Better rapport and treatment adherence
  • Increased suggestibility
  • Reduced resistance to treatment
  • Allowing for better access to unconscious material
