Hypnosis is a natural state of increased focused attention, concentration, and deep relaxation, also called “trance state”. Trance states occur naturally every day in most people and are comparable to the relaxed state we reach when in meditation or doing yoga.
Clinical or medical hypnosis is being used for relaxation, for the therapy of specific psychological or physical disorders as well as to improve performance (in sports, studying, exams and professional life).
How to get into a hypnotic state
Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention and relaxation, which occurs naturally in everyday life.
Examples are
- day-dreaming, or
- this state of being in thoughts during a monotonous activity, e.g. driving for a long time on an uninteresting highway
The perception changes and is more intense. During a hypnosis session, the therapist (hypnotist) helps the patient to go into a hypnotic state, and use this trance state to work on a therapeutic goal.
